Babies and Toddlers

In the fall we will have Tot Shabbat, a Parent and Me class, on Fridays 9:30-10:45.  Infants, babies, and toddlers along with their grown-ups will sing songs, hear stories, do age appropriate art projects, and celebrate Shabbat with Lisa Weinbaum and Rabbi/Cantor Diane.

Sunday Class – Elementary Ages

Cool Shul has a “Cool School”  two Sundays per month for children in grades 1-5 (and mature kindergarten students) from 9:30-11:30 am.  All classes are held at the Cool Shul office.  It is a mixed-age environment, and the group is led by Rabbi/Cantor Diane and Adam Snir.  Each year has a theme.  So far we have studied “Pillars of Judaism” and "Jewish Lifecycle."  For 2017-2018 we will be focusing on things we might find in a Jewish home or synagogue.   Each session we explore part of the calendar or our annual theme and engage in experiential learning with hands-on activities, games, and Tikkun Olam (healing the world) projects.  Our goal is to teach your child the universal lessons that are the fabric of Jewish practice... how this struture can help remind us to be better humans, and to take care of one another and the world.  We don't teach rules or laws as elements to follow, but to interpret and make ones own.

We also learn a little modern Hebrew through movement and games, and dive into the prayers found in a siddur (Jewish prayerbook).

Thursday Class – Middle School Ages

Cool Shul also offers Judaica and Prayerbook Hebrew study for students who are pre-Bar/Bat Mitzvah in grades 5 through 8 (or earlier if you want it!) on Thursdays, 3:45-5:45pm. These sessions are with Rabbi/Cantor Diane and take place at the Cool Shul office.  We use the Sarah and David series to dig deeply into the language of Jewish prayer as we start thinking about leading services as a Bar or Bat-Mitzvah!  We also explore Torah stories, holidays, and a variety of Jewish themes and explore them with a little more maturity as we inch toward adulthood.

Which brings us to…

Bar/Bat-Mitzvah Program!

Because we are a small organization, we can create a Bar/Bat-Mitzvah experience that is completely personalized for your family.  Rabbi/Cantor Diane will discuss with the Bar/Bat-Mitzvah and his/her family what their hopes and dreams are for the service and for the process of learning. Together they create a learning plan and ceremony model that is demonstrative of the family’s goals for this unique demonstration of learning.  Students study with Rabbi/Cantor Diane weekly for one year prior to a mutually chosen Bar/Bat-Mitzvah date.  All study sessions take place at the Cool Shul office.

$4600 (non-partner)/$3600 (partner price)

Teen Team Tikkun Olam/Confirmation

For students beyond Bar/Bat-Mitzvah, we still gather together for modern Hebrew study, Torah study, and Tikkun Olam activities as we work toward the teen years and confirmation. Our teens are encouraged to serve as Teaching Assistants in our Sunday class as well.  They can earn service hours too!!  This program is being planned to begin in early October.

If you have questions about any of these programs, call or email Rabbi/Cantor Diane at 310-745-4578 or diane@coolshul.org to chat and get registration information..
